Short description

The 13th LED Conference was held from July 10–14, 2011, at the Faculty of Mathematics, Nicolaus Copernicus University (NCU) in Toruń, Poland, co-organized by NCU and the Silesian University of Technology (SUT). The event was chaired by Professor Andrzej Bluszcz with support from a dedicated organizing committee. Over 230 participants from more than 30 countries attended the event.

The scientific program featured over 70 oral and 140 poster presentations, including four workshop lectures and a roundtable on standardizing luminescence age reporting. A strong emphasis was placed on methodological advances and practical applications of luminescence and ESR dating, particularly in addressing feldspar dating challenges. Proceedings were published in Radiation Measurements (methodology focus) and Quaternary Geochronology (applications focus).

Student Awards were a conference highlight:

  • Martin Aitken Prize (Best Oral): Georgina King and Guillaume Guérin
  • Vagn Mejdahl Prize (Best Poster): Dominik Brill
  • Ann Wintle Prize (Best Applied Paper): Yiwei Chen
  • Honorable mentions were given to several students for both oral and poster presentations.

Social events included a banquet hosted by the President of Toruń at the Arthus Court and a conference dinner at the medieval castle in Golub-Dobrzyń. A post-conference field trip, led by Dr. Jarosław Sikorski, took participants from Toruń to Kraków, with stops at historic and geological sites such as Malbork Castle, Biskupin, Wapienno quarry, and the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

The LED 2011 proceedings were dedicated to John Prescott and Glenn Berger, two esteemed scientists whose foundational contributions to luminescence dating profoundly shaped the field and who passed away shortly before the conference. Their obituaries are included in the conference volumes
