Short description
As part of the European contribution to the international initiative “EARTHTIME” the Geochronology Group at the Research Center for Human Evolution (CENIEH; Burgos, Spain), Drs. Lee Arnold, Mathieu Duval, Dirk Hoffmann and Josep M. Parés, hosted a scientific meeting in September 2013 titled: "The Early-Middle Pleistocene transition: Significance of the Jaramillo Subchron in the sedimentary record". This international meeting took place at the CENIEH facilities, Spain, from the 25th to 27th of September, 2013. An attendance by 34 invited research scientists from eight different countries made a highly successful and enriching workshop, full of discussions and debate of new ideas.
The “Jaramillo Meeting” brought together specialists from various fields (magnetostratigraphy, paleoclimatology, cyclostratigraphy, paleoecology, paleontology, palinology, biostratigraphy, geochronology, archaeology) in order to provide an updated overview of the Jaramillo Subchron and in general on the Early-Middle Pleistocene (EMP) transition. The main goal of the meeting was to share new results and ideas that are relevant to this period of time and promote future Partstudies.
The meeting ended with a round table including the keynote speakers in order to encourage a final discussion on the main issues that have been raised during the meeting. A post meeting excursion to the Atapuerca archaeological sites, declared UNESCO World Heritage in 2000, was organized on Friday afternoon.
The Scientific meeting was sponsored with funds from the European Science Foundation (ESF) through the EARTHTIME-EU Research Network Programme (RNP) and nominal received support from both the INQUA Commission on Stratigraphy and Chronology (INQUA-SACCOM) and the Subcommission on Quaternary Stratigraphy, which is part of the International commission on Stratigraphy.
